What To Bring

What To Bring

There are some things we just can't live without. If we can live without them, we wouldn’t prefer to and it's not nearly as comfortable. Be aware of the size difference between westerners and Chinese people. Here’s a suggested list of what to bring.

GENERAL

  • **IMPORTANT** Download A VPN to all your WiFi enabled devices: learn why VPN: Unblocking Websites

  • All legal documents (passport, contract, work permit, etc.)

  • Host Country’s Currency [RMB/Chinese Yuan] (*Note* If your company doesn’t provide free housing, be prepared to pay first/last month’s rent and/or deposit to secure a place. This may not be necessary, but be financially prepared. Have at least three month's worth of your home country’s currency in your account back home/one month's worth of RMB to take to China)

  • New Electronics (If you NEED a new laptop, tablet, phone, etc. Bring it from your home country. Otherwise, potentially deal with Chinese software)

  • Unlocked Cell Phone

  • Download a language translation app: see Language Resources

  • Universal power converter

  • Download WeChat (highly recommend) | WhatsApp and/or Skype

  • Deodorant (the ones here may not work the same)

  • Fluoride Rinse (in the dental section of the store)

  • Medium bristle tooth brushes (if it’s your preference)

  • Toothpaste WITH fluoride

  • Food: Grits/Seasonings/Spices/Hot Sauce/BBQ/Salad Dressing (if that's your thing)

  • Family planning/Contraception

  • Protein/Vitamin Supplements

  • Medicine: Prescriptions or hard to find medicine

  • Fragrances

  • Bring movies and TV shows you can watch offline. In case the VPN goes down, you want to continue watching your favorite shows from home without worrying about internet connections.

LADIES

  • Shoes: larger than a US size 8? Bring PLENTY and comfortable shoes

  • Feminine hygiene items: Tampons and diva cups aren't popular here.

  • If you're larger than a B cup...you already know...LOL!!

  • If you are curvy/plus size bring enough clothes

(MELANATED) LADIES

  • Skin care: Moisturizers, creams, etc. Some skin care products contain bleaching agents. Unless you can read Chinese and read the label, just avoid it. I brought Shea Butter with me. I was so glad I did. Natural oils are easier to find.

  • Hair supplies: Your favorite hair extensions, wigs, moisturizers and anything else to keep your hair cute. I’ve learned how to make my own hair creams and it’s easy and healthier for my hair.

  • Makeup: Unless you want to filter through 50 shades of beige, I suggest bringing your favorite color-matching, highly pigmented shades of foundation and eye shadow.

MEN

  • A good set of clippers (if necessary)

  • Wave cap, brush, hair grease

  • Underwear

  • Clothes: If you are tall or heavyset, bring enough clothes

  • Shoes: If your feet are bigger than normal, bring plenty of comfortable ones

You want to be comfortable. Think of the items you know you just wouldn't feel comfortable without. Be sure to take a little piece of home with you to help your transition.

Good Luck!
